Sunflowers originate from North America as nearly at 1000 BC and are cultivate for their seeds to make a huge variety of products. Their name comes from resemblance to the sun and their petals are ever referred to a rays.
Sunflowers symbolise adoration, loyalty and longevity. People say that they make them feel happy, but who can blame them – those huge yellow faces are just gorgeous!
The sunflower is the national flower of Russia and are heliotriopic, meaning they turn to face the sun as it moves across the sky.
The average sunflower head contains 2000 seeds – a reason why they are able to self seed and why birds love them so much.
The largest recorded sunflower head was in Canada and measured 32.5 inches!! That wouldn’t work in one of our jars. Luckily, we’re using a smaller (dwarf) variety in our jars this week and the larger (but still small) heads in our bouquets. Enjoy!
